Baku Shipyard Unveils Azerbaijan's First Cutter Suction Dredger
Baku Shipyard and Damen are shaping maritime innovation in Azerbaijan with the high-powered CSD650 dredger for the Port of Baku.
In a significant development for Azerbaijan's maritime industry, Baku Shipyard is nearing completion of the country's first-ever cutter suction dredger (CSD), the Damen CSD650. This project marks a milestone in local shipbuilding capabilities and is set to enhance the operational efficiency of the Port of Baku.
The CSD650, named Engineer Soltan Kazimov, is designed for maintenance dredging operations at depths ranging from 3 to 18 meters. Equipped with a 700 kW cutter and a 1,825 kW dredge pump, it boasts a 63-meter swing width, ensuring effective sediment removal and navigational depth maintenance. The modular design, featuring a main pontoon and detachable side pontoons, facilitates transportation and assembly, making it adaptable to various operational requirements.
The collaboration between Damen Shipyards Group and Baku Shipyard has been instrumental in this endeavor. Damen supplied the design and key components, including the dredge pump and operating cabin, which were transported via eleven trailers and two 40-foot containers. Baku Shipyard is executing all steelwork in accordance with Damen's specifications.
Alexander Shamray, Damen's Sales Manager, praised the partnership, stating, "We are delighted to work with Baku Shipyard. The cooperation with the yard team is excellent, reflected in the dredger's high quality. The professional team has taken up the project brilliantly, and the quality of the output is impressive. We are delighted that the dredger is progressing the way it is, especially considering that it is the first yard built."
The Port of Baku, strategically located on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, has experienced significant growth, necessitating regular dredging to maintain berth accessibility. The introduction of Engineer Soltan Kazimov will play a crucial role in supporting the port's expansion and accommodating increasing maritime traffic.
This development aligns with SA Operations' commitment to supporting advancements in maritime infrastructure and offshore projects. By fostering collaborations and enhancing local capabilities, such initiatives contribute to the sustainable growth of the marine industry.
