Van Oord, a top global contractor with expertise in maritime engineering, dredging, and offshore projects, has been given a contract by RWE to transport and construct the monopile foundations for the Nordseecluster offshore wind project in Germany. The installation of the scour protection and 104 enlarged monopiles are included in Van Oord's scope of work.
The Nordseecluster, which consists of two offshore wind farms, is being developed in two phases: the 660 MW Nordseecluster A and the 900 MW Nordseecluster B. It is anticipated that the 1.6 GW wind farm cluster would provide enough clean energy to power 1.6 million households in Germany.
The final investment decision for developing the Nordseecluster in the German North Sea, around 50 kilometres north of Juist Island, was recently made by RWE.
The foundations for the Nordseecluster's two building stages will be transported and installed by Van Oord's offshore installation vessel, Boreas. The installation of 44 monopiles in 2025 and the remaining 60 in 2027 are scheduled to take place.
RWE (51%) and Northland Power (49%) are stakeholders in Nordseecluster offshore wind project.
Since this project will be the first for the brand-new offshore installation vessel Boreas, which is presently being built, it represents a significant milestone for Van Oord.
