Jones Bros, a civil engineering firm, has formally handed over the substation to site owner Menter Môn Morlais Ltd., marking a major milestone for the Anglesey tidal energy project, Morlais. This move indicates that the initial phase of the 240MW project was completed on schedule and within budget. It acted as the focal point of the partnership between Jones Bros. and Menter Môn Morlais Ltd. The £24 million substation is an important element of the infrastructure for a new tidal energy development on Anglesey.
The project will now continue forward as it plans to put turbines in the water by 2026. The project began on-site at Holyhead in the spring of 2022. More than 70 Jones Bros employees, including 10 apprentices, worked on the site, with 86% coming from North Wales.
Gareth Roberts, operations manager at Menter Môn Morlais, stated, "We're excited to be moving on to the next phase, which will see us engaging with developers of tidal stream technology to ensure we can begin generating low carbon electricity in the sea here in 2026." We would also want to thank the surrounding community for their cooperation during the substation's development; this is a project that I believe we can all be proud of."
"We are thrilled to have reached this stage in Morlais' development. It was a delight to work with the Jones brothers. Their efficiency and safety record has been outstanding from the start, and our shared principles of creating local jobs have allowed us to meet one of our primary goals: ensuring local benefit from this significant project."
Various other local firms, notably Cadarn Consulting and OBR Construction, were instrumental in this period on-site. The initiative is sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. The project is also supported by the Isle of Anglesey County Council, The Nuclear Restoration Service (previously the Nuclear Development Authority), and the North Wales Growth Deal.
Eryl Roberts, Contracts Director at Jones Bros, added: "Offering chances for north Wales-based staff, including apprentices, and the local supplier chain, was also vital to us as a firm, and we met those objectives. We appreciate Menter Môn Morlais Ltd and the community for their assistance and support."
